The Cameroonian diocese of Bertoua was created on March 17, 1983 by detachment from the diocese of DOUME.
On November 11, 1994, the diocese of Bertoua was established as an archdiocese.
The Archdiocese of Bertoua then had an area of 82,301 km².
For the sake of a better pastoral care, the Archdiocese of Bertoua will be divided, giving birth in turn to the diocese of Yokadouma on May 20, 1991 and to the diocese of BATOURI on February 3, 1994. Today, the Archdiocese of Bertoua does not extends more than an area of 26,320 km².
Since its creation, have succeeded at its head:
- Monsignor Lambertus Johannes van Heygen, appointed March 17, 1983;
- Monsignor Roger Pirenne, appointed June 3, 1999;
- Monsignor Joseph Atanga, appointed December 3, 2009.
